Henrik Sjöman

Associate Professor at Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Scientific Curator at
Gothenburg Botanic Garden, and Honoree Research Associate at Royal Botanic Garden Kew.

Henrik´s work is focused on developing knowledge of plant-use for urban environments. His work is mainly focusing on developing knowledge of site adapted plant use for urban environments. How the capacity of different trees and shrubs will vary in context to its urban environment and in delivering ecosystem services has become the prime driver in his work and as such how to extend the knowledge of diversifying the urban treescape in a future climate.

Sjöman is co-author, together with Arit Anderson, of "The Essential Tree Selection Guide: For Climate Resilience, Carbon Storage, Species Diversity and Other Ecosystem Benefits", an innovative resource aimed at temperate regions across the globe. The book presents an integrated, evidence-based approach to tree selection, systematically addressing the wide range of ecosystem services that trees can provide.

GARDEN MASTERCLASS 2025

The art of choosing the right tree for place and function, using different urban case studies

For the first time in Italy, this masterclass features the participation of Henrik Sjöman, Associate Professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and an internationally recognized expert in the selection of tree species for urban environments. The event offers a unique opportunity to explore, from both a scientific and practical perspective, the criteria for plant selection in urban contexts, in light of the climate and environmental challenges our cities will face in the coming decades.

Going beyond the traditional role of carbon dioxide absorption, the course will examine the broader functions of trees, including noise mitigation, the creation of shaded areas, support for biodiversity (e.g., as a food source for pollinators during periods of scarcity), and resilience to extreme environmental conditions such as drought, poor soils, and strong winds.

This highlights the importance of adopting a multidimensional approach during the planning phase: the selection of species must be based on an integrated assessment of ecosystem functions, the specific context, and long-term needs. Some species stand out for their adaptive capacity, others for specific environmental benefits; it is therefore crucial to make targeted and informed choices that ensure effectiveness, sustainability, and long-term durability.

The event is aimed at designers, planners, and green space professionals interested in developing sound strategies for building more resilient and functional urban ecosystems.
